A higher starting benefit means larger COLA increases over time. See how a 3.0% COLA compares based on when you might have claimed.
How It Works: The Details
The COLA is based on the average inflation during the third quarter (July-September) of the year, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The SSA compares this year's Q3 average to last year's Q3 average. The percentage increase becomes the COLA for the next year.
The official announcement happens in mid-October, after the September inflation data is released.
The increase automatically applies to nearly all Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries, including:
- Retired workers and their spouses
- Survivors of deceased workers (widows, widowers, children)
- Individuals receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
- Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
For Social Security benefits (Retirement, Survivor, SSDI): Your new, higher amount will be in your regular January 2025 payment. The delivery date depends on your birthday.
- Birthday 1st-10th: Second Wednesday of January
- Birthday 11th-20th: Third Wednesday of January
- Birthday 21st-31st: Fourth Wednesday of January
For SSI benefits: Because Jan 1st is a holiday, your COLA-adjusted payment will arrive around December 31, 2024.
Stay Alert: Protect Yourself From Scams
Scammers use the annual COLA announcement to trick people. They may call, text, or email you pretending to be from the Social Security Administration. Know the warning signs.
Red Flags Checklist

- ! A demand for payment via gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.
