Other Conditions That Require You to File
Even if your gross income is below the threshold, you must file a tax return if any of the following apply. This is important for meeting your obligations or claiming valuable tax benefits.
- Net earnings from self-employment of at least $400: To pay Self-Employment Tax.
- Advance payments of the Premium Tax Credit (PTC) were made: If you received Form 1095-A, you must reconcile the subsidy.
- Received distributions from an HSA, Archer MSA, or Medicare Advantage MSA.
- Wages of $108.28 or more from a church or qualified church-controlled organization that is exempt from employer Social Security and Medicare taxes.
- To get a tax refund: You must file to get back any federal income tax withheld.
- To claim certain tax credits: Necessary to claim refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
Special Deadline Rules
While April 15 is the deadline for most taxpayers, some situations qualify for automatic extensions or different dates.
- Residents of Maine (ME) and Massachusetts (MA): The deadline is typically adjusted to around April 17 due to the Patriots' Day holiday.
- U.S. citizens and residents living abroad: Receive an automatic 2-month extension to file until June 15. (The deadline to pay taxes is still April 15).
- Military members serving in a combat zone: Filing and payment duties are deferred for 180 days after they leave the combat zone.
- Residents of federally declared disaster areas: Deadlines may be automatically extended by the IRS for affected areas.
